Mesothelioma
Almost 2000 people a year are diagnosed with mesothelioma according to the UK Mesothelioma Charitable Trust. Mesothelioma is a type of lung cancer caused almost exclusively by exposure to asbestos; 9 out of 10 cases. The cancer forms in the lining of the lung or peritoneum. As with lung cancer, it can take the mesothelioma anywhere between 15 and 60 years to present itself and, unfortunately, by this point it is almost always fatal.
Asbestos is so dangerous that it can take only a single fibre to cause mesothelioma and yet the effects are devastating. It is a challenging disease to diagnose, however, and the symptoms can often be quite vague. These include breathlessness, tiredness, chest pain and weight loss.
