Spinal Injury

Spinal Injury

Each year, between approximately 2,000 and 4,000 people will suffer some sort of injury to their spine, with about 2,000 of these being an injury to the actual spinal cord (SCI). It is important to distinguish between spine injuries and SCIs. A person may suffer a spinal injury (such as fractured or broken vertebrae) without actually suffering a SCI. A spinal injury will not have the same devastating and far reaching implications as a SCI, though it will still be worth pursing if arises due to the negligence of another. The causes of spinal injuries and SCIs can be 'traumatic' (such as accidents, falls, sports injuries and as a result of an assault) or non-traumatic (such as an infection or a disease at birth).

Common consequences of a spinal injury include; paraplegia, tetraplegia and anterior, posterior or central cord syndrome.

If your injury is as a result of a criminal attack you could receive a payment from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA). This is a government funded award and there are strict conditions for the compensation to be awarded (e.g. there must have been a violent crime and you must have reported it).
