6 Year old boy dies of meningitis

A 6 year old boy has died after he was diagnosed with a sore throat and given antibiotics.

His grandmother was told to take him home and let him sleep, she took him back a few hours later when he developed new symptoms. He was diagnosed with meningitis but sadly died a couple of hours later.

Rob Antrobus head of the clinical negligence team at Foot Anstey made this comment:

"It is very sad to hear of another death from meningitis, so soon after that of a schoolgirl in Cornwall.

"Everyone needs to be vigilant to the signs of this dreadful disease and if they have any concerns to seek medical advice straight away. Useful information on meningitis, including details of the signs and symptoms, can be found at www.meningitis-trust.org.

"Unfortunately, delays in diagnosis and treatment can prove to be devastating and in some cases fatal.

"We have built up strong links with the Meningitis Trust and therefore we are well placed to provide expert, specialist, advice to those affected by meningitis".
